The Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Enforcement Unit (Taskforce) has arrested six individuals allegedly operating a fraudulent street lottery scheme at Iyana-Ipaja.

Those apprehended include Amaike Nelson, Kenneth Opuana, Oguntade Olusegun, Ogologo Obi, Goodluck Abel, and Oluwafunmilayo Adebimpe. According to officials, the arrests followed credible intelligence about the gang’s criminal activities in the area.

The suspects were accused of luring a 19-year-old student, Rukayat Kamilu, into a fake lottery setup. During the incident, one of the suspects—Oguntade Olusegun—allegedly approached her, pretending to be a confused passer-by needing help with selecting a “winning number.” Once she got involved, her phone was seized, and she was pressured into paying N100,000 to get it back.

Acting swiftly on a tip-off, officers led by Taskforce Chairman, CSP Adetayo Akerele, moved in on the location and apprehended the suspects. Several empty Android phone boxes, believed to be props used in the scam, were recovered during the operation.

Condemning the act, CSP Akerele assured Lagosians that efforts to curb street crime were being intensified.

“Our responsibility is to safeguard the lives and property of Lagosians. We will leave no room for such fraudulent activities to thrive,” he said.

Following their arrest, the suspects were arraigned before a Magistrates’ Court on charges of gambling, extortion, theft, and conspiracy. All six pleaded guilty. The court ordered that they remain in custody pending further hearing set for August 7, 2025.
