The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is prepared to declare a nationwide strike affecting all its members in public universities across the country.
ASUU’s concern revolved around the tenure of former councils, which it claimed was prematurely terminated by the government. ASUU asserts that this action is unlawful.
During a recent briefing at the University of Lagos, Prof Adelaja Odukoya, the Lagos Zonal Coordinator of ASUU, stressed that dismantling the former councils should only occur if they violate the relevant laws.

Furthermore, ASUU continued to advocate for the release of withheld salaries for its members, rejecting any attempts to establish a master-servant relationship with lecturers.

ASUU said:
“We are not slaves and we are not afraid to go on strike, the court case instituted against us by the former administration has been concluded. There is nothing stopping us from going on strike if the need arises.
“They promised us when they came in that there would be peace and harmony on our campuses, but already, they are toeing the path of war.”
