It is based on the Big Brother TV franchise where participants live in an isolated house surrounded by multiple cameras watching their every move while competing for a large cash prize and other material prizes.

They have to avoid being evicted from the house by viewers and/or fellow contestants who vote for their favorite housemates to remain at the end of the show.

BBNaija has gained massive popularity and a strong cult-like fan base over the years as many viewers find the show, not just entertaining but a release from their reality.

Many see themselves as the next BBNaija star as being a part of it brings exposure and fame to them but the puzzling question on everyone’s mind is who is the owner of Big Brother Naija.

There have been many controversies on who owns it over the years with even a few mentioning Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, the host as the owner of the show but he is not.

In this article, we answer the question of who the real owner of Big Brother Naija is and everything there is to know about him, and how he came up with the wonderful idea for the Big Brother show.

Who is the Owner of Big Brother Naija?

The owner of the Big Brother Naija show is the MultiChoice Nigeria company and it is hosted by their subsidiary Africa Magic.

MultiChoice Nigeria has done a great job over the years bringing BBN to its current height with its content.
MultiChoice is a broadcasting pay television and the owner of DStv and GOtv.

While MultiChoice Nigeria is the owner of Big Brother Nigeria, they were not the ones who created the show. The creator/owner of the Big Brother show on which Big Brother Naija is based is Johannes Hendrikus Hubert de Mol Jr.

Also known as John de Mol Jr., he was born on the 24th of April, 1955. He is a Dutch billionaire, media tycoon, businessman, television/film producer, and corporate director.

He has created many reality television shows such as Big Brother, The Voice, and Fear Factor.

His only known relatives are his father, John de Mol Sr., and his sister, Linda de Mol. He is currently married to Els de Mol but has one child, Johnny de Mol, to his previous wife, Willeke Alberti, who he divorced in 1980.

As an expert in the media field, John de Mol was already known for coming up with great ideas for his shows, but his format for the Big Brother show came from a classic science fiction book written by George Orwell named ‘Nineteen Eighty-Four’.

The book depicts a dystopian world in which there are audio microphones and cameras on everybody all the time and the footage is viewed by the “thought police” (a.k.a Big Brother in the show).

Conclusion

Big Brother Naija has faced much criticism over the years such as it being immoral and toxic but that has not stopped the rapid growth of the show as it is thrilling and exciting to watch.

It has even attracted the likes Betway and Bet9ja who figure prominently in a list of the best betting apps to drop huge sums of money to partner with them.

MultiChoice Nigeria as the owner of Big Brother Naija has not skipped out on any detail of the show making it worth the viewers’ and contestants’ time
