Nigerian singer Davido, also known as David Adeleke, discussed the global rise of the afrobeats genre during a panel discussion on Hiptv with the United States Advisory Council on Africa Diaspora Engagement and Leaders in Nigeria’s Creative Industries. He highlighted that afrobeats artists are now selling tickets comparable to global pop and hip-hop stars like Drake.
Davido emphasized that the earnings from a single afrobeats song can create generational wealth, stating, “Afrobeats artists are selling tickets like Drake. Now, one song as an afrobeats artist can change your entire generation.”
He encouraged young artists to prioritize collaboration among themselves rather than pursuing international features, underscoring, “When you collaborate with your friends, they give it their all.”
