Ex-Nigerian League Coach, Maurice Cooreman, Dies

Maurice Cooreman, a former coach of Akwa United has reportedly died at the age of 79 in Belgium.

The late coach managed clubs in Nigeria’s domestic league such as Akwa United, Enyimba, Ocean Boys, Warri Wolves, and Gombe United.

Cooreman led the defunct Ocean Boys to the Nigerian title in 2006, but was sacked in September 2006 and then rehired two weeks later.

He managed the Enyimba from October 2006 to November 2008. He was banned for five games in April 2008 after attacking a referee.

In November 2008, he was appointed manager of Asante Kotoko in Ghana’s Premier League. Again, in Nigeria Cooreman has also managed the NPA. Bendel Insurance, Lobi Stars, and Gabros as well as Kaduna United.

Cooreman continued with Kaduna United for another year on August 30, 2010, after leading the team to a historic Federation Cup victory for the state for the first time.

He assumed the Warri Wolves’ new head coach on February 20, 2012. In October 2012, he signed a one-year contract with Gombe United and resigned in 2014 due to his health.

In March 2015, he was hired as coach of second-division Ikorodu United.
