Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville criticized Belgium’s Jan Vertonghen for his costly mistake in their 1-0 loss to France in the Round of 16 at Euro 2024.
The match in Düsseldorf saw both teams holding their own with no goals in the first half. However, in the second half, Kolo Muani’s late deflected shot off Vertonghen found the back of the net, beating goalkeeper Koen Casteels and securing victory for Didier Deschamps’ side.
Speaking on ITV, Neville said, “Vertonghen will be really disappointed with the goal, not just because it’s an own goal. He needed to shift up. Kolo Muani didn’t do anything extraordinary, but Vertonghen was a bit slow to react. It’s not just bad luck; it’s poor defending. As an experienced player, he will be devastated by this mistake.”
