Jose Peseiro Bids Farewell to Super Eagles and Nigeria Football Federation

Jose Peseiro

Portuguese coach Jose Peseiro bids farewell to the Nigeria Football Federation and the Super Eagles following the conclusion of his contract, as reported by Soccernet.ng.

Peseiro assumed the helm of the Super Eagles in May 2022, stepping in after coach Augustine Eguavoen’s tenure ended without securing a World Cup ticket. Transitioning from his role with the Venezuela national team, Peseiro faced skepticism due to his modest track record.

Initial doubts deepened when the team suffered consecutive losses under his leadership. However, Peseiro quickly reversed the tide, securing victories against Sierra Leone and Sao Tome and Principe, including a resounding 10-0 win.

Despite these triumphs, the Super Eagles delivered mixed performances leading up to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. Initially set to depart in July, Peseiro extended his contract for six months, guiding the team through the AFCON where they exceeded expectations, finishing as runners-up after a 2-1 defeat to Cote d’Ivoire.

Following the tournament, speculation arose regarding Peseiro’s future, with rumors linking him to the Algerian national team job. However, recent announcements confirming the appointment of Vladimir Petkovic ended such discussions.

Amidst lingering uncertainty about his tenure, Jose Peseiro took to social media to bid farewell to the Super Eagles and the NFF on Friday.

“Yesterday, we concluded our contract with the NFF. It was a pride and honour to coach the Super Eagles,” Peseiro wrote.

“It has been 22 months of immense dedication, sacrifice, emotion, and enormous enthusiasm. We feel a sense of fulfilment.

“We would like to express our gratitude to Sir Amaju Pinnick (the president who signed us), President Ibrahim Gusau, General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi, Secretary Dayo Enebi, the NFF, all the Staff, and especially all the PLAYERS, with whom leading has been a great pleasure.

“Guys, we are thankful; it has been a privilege to be part of this family. We will miss you, but we will always be there for you, no matter where you are. A big hug to all of you.
