Residents of the Niger Delta region are in distress as a massive crude oil spill from OML 30 has polluted the waters surrounding the Odidi Federated Communities and many other areas.

The spill, now ongoing for five days, remains uncontrolled, with no visible response from Heritage Oil – operators of OML 30 – nor Neconde Energy Limited, whose dredging activities led to the rupture of a trunk line.

The chairman of Ekeremor community, Mr. Abanre Mark expressed the frustration felt by over 100 communities impacted by the spill.

Speaking on behalf of the affected areas, Abanre lamented the frequency of such incidents in the region, describing it as a recurring problem that threatens their way of life.

“This is not the first time we are facing such a situation. The oil companies have shown no urgency in addressing these spills,” Mr. Mark stated, highlighting the ongoing neglect.

Meanwhile, local residents have raised alarms over the potential dangers posed by the spill. Some noted that they can not even light fires out of fear of a possible explosion, as the crude continues to spread through the waters unchecked.

They pleaded for urgent intervention to prevent further damage and ensure the safety of their communities.

The spill has been attributed to neglect to routine maintenance measures by Heritage Oil.

Despite mounting concerns and environmental hazards, the companies involved have yet to deploy containment measures, leaving the communities and their fragile ecosystems in a perilous state.
