Team Nigeria added fresh momentum to its campaign at the 6th Islamic Solidarity Games in Riyadh, winning two gold medals on Wednesday night in wrestling and the women’s 4x100m relay.

The update was confirmed in a statement issued by Kola Daniel, Special Adviser to the Director-General of the National Sports Commission, Bukola Olapade.

In the 53kg freestyle wrestling final, Christiana Ogunsanya delivered one of the most commanding performances of the tournament, overpowering Uzbekistan’s Shokhida Akhmedova 11–1 to claim the gold medal. Her victory added another highlight to Nigeria’s steady rise in wrestling at international events.

Nigeria’s thrilling young relay team; Bada Toyin, Ezechukwu Miracle, Omokwe Maria, and Nweke Cynthia also lit up the track, storming to victory in the women’s 4x100m relay with a time of 44.27 seconds. Their sharp baton exchanges and strong finish pushed Bahrain to second place with 44.47 seconds, while Gambia settled for third in 45.05 seconds.

Beyond the gold medals, Nigeria secured two silver and three bronze medals. In the men’s javelin, Kure Adams took bronze, while Badmus Atanda added another bronze in the men’s 400m. In the women’s 400m, Patience George finished second behind her Bahraini rival, and the men’s 4x100m relay team clinched bronze.

In wrestling, Miesinnei Genesis narrowly missed gold in the 50kg freestyle final after a 5–1 loss to Uzbekistan’s Aktenge Keunimjaeva, settling for silver.

Olapade praised the athletes for their determination, noting that their performances reflected Nigeria’s growing strength in athletics and wrestling. He assured them that President Bola Tinubu and the National Sports Commission would continue to provide the necessary exposure and support ahead of future competitions.

Team Nigeria’s medal count now stands at eight gold, 10 silver, and seven bronze, with expectations of more medals in para-athletics and para-powerlifting as the Games continue.
