Nigerians Turn to VPNs as Twitter is Officially Down

Micro blogging platform, Twitter is finally down in Nigeria in-line with the federal government’s ban on social media outfit on Friday.

Nigerians can no longer access the most visited social media platform mostly visited in the West African country.

Different sources have reported major telecom operators like MTN, Airtel, 9Mobile and Glo users can no longer access Twitter both through the website or mobile app.

Twitter had Wednesday deleted President Muhammadu Buhari’s tweet posted Tuesday where he threatened to deal with secessionists “in the language they understand”.

The controversial tweet which was widely criticized by twitter users read: “Many of those misbehaving today are too young to be aware of the destruction and loss of lives that occurred during the Nigerian Civil War. Those of us in the fields for 30 months, who went through the war, will treat them in the language they understand.”

The federal government had accused Twitter of taking sides and said its was suspicious of the micro blogging site’s role in the agitations of IPOB for Biafa.

Meanwhile, Nigerians are quickly adopting Virtual Private Networks as an alternative to gain access, following the suspension of Twitter at midnight on Friday.
