Northern Group Condemns the Attack on NIA Director-General

NIA

The Northern Emancipation Network (NEN) has condemned what it calls the incessant attempts by certain interests to tarnish the image of Ambassador Rufai Abubakar, the current Director General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), by those who would rather see the NIA decay and remain unprofessional.

Suleiman Abbah, the party’s National Secretary, stated as much in a statement.

According to the statement, “the traducers, who were actively backed by a fugitive former NIA employee, accused Rufai of committing every sin under the sun, including the sanctioning of an errant Radio Programme by a competent regulatory body.”

Facts are being shamefully and openly reviewed, rewritten, and falsified in the process to suit certain agendas that tend to portray the Professor as the wrong person for the job.

“We are equally concerned and extremely concerned that, despite Ambassador Rufai’s studied and dignified reserve, and refusal to engage in altercations with these self-appointed enemies and antagonists, no stone is being left unturned to ensure that they unjustifiably brand him unqualified for a job for which he is eminently qualified.”

“It is obvious to everyone who cares that Ambassador Rufai is not, by any stretch of the imagination, incompetent; he has never been. His track record of flawless performance from the time he was a student to his various jobs attests to this.

“Those who want to confirm can contact the authorities at Arabic Teachers College Katsina (now Usman Nagogo College of Arabic Studies), and Bayero University Kano (BUK), for his academic records. Similarly, his bosses and supervisors from other places he worked alongside the NIA, such as BUK, Katsina State Government (KTSG), United Nations (UN), African Union (AU), and the State House, could be approached for their impressions and assessments of his competence.

While his record of service as an officer of the Agency for more than two decades remains confidential, we are confident that he was a successful intelligence officer who earned the trust and admiration of his superiors, resulting in his selection as a suitable officer to be seconded to the continental and global multilateral institutions where only the best from all countries are accepted.

“In light of the foregoing verifiable observations, the Northern Emancipation Network has arrived at the following unavoidable conclusions and inferences:

“That it is insane, an abuse of common decency, and an insult to Nigerians’ collective sensibilities to ascribe incompetence to such a highly successful international civil servant.”

“The accusers of Rufai are a gang of blackmailers and extortionists masquerading as journalists.”

The fact that these fringe publications are being sponsored by others is known to the authorities, including a fugitive from justice, in the effort to bring Rufai down.

That the goal of these critics and their collaborators is to undermine national security by distracting the NIA as an institution.”
