Chelsea’s appeal to overturn Reece James’ four-match ban has been unsuccessful. James received a straight red card for kicking out at Brighton striker Joao Pedro.
Documents from the FA, reviewed by Mail Sport, include evidence submitted by Chelsea and Reece James. They argued that James was “disoriented” after being fouled from behind, that Pedro “made contact” as he ran past, and that James was merely trying to push Pedro away with his foot without intending harm.
However, the FA’s independent regulatory commission unanimously rejected this explanation. As a result, James will serve the remainder of his four-game ban, his second red card of the season. He will miss Chelsea’s first three fixtures of the 2024/2025 campaign, having already missed their final game against Bournemouth.
