Senate Proposes Law to Transmit Election Results Electronically

The Senate Committee on Electoral Matters has proposed new legislation that would require the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to electronically transmit election results.

Sen Sharafadeen Alli, the committee’s leader, revealed the proposal in an interview with Channels Television on November 21, 2023.

The aim of the proposal, Alli said, is to enhance transparency and efficiency in Nigeria’s electoral process.

The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Electoral Act has assured that the legislation will be passed.

He said:
Under the current law, it is not mandatory for INEC to upload results; that is what the court has said. But as we are going forward, it is going to be mandatory.”

Additionally, the committee is advocating for a strict timeframe for filing and resolving election petitions to prevent unnecessary political turmoil caused by delays.

The Senator also mentioned past disappointments with the IReV system and pledged efforts to ensure substantial improvements by INEC in the area.
