Seun Kuti, one of the sons of Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti, revealed that the late MKO Abiola and his wife, Simbiat, framed his father for armed robbery during Muhammadu Buhari’s military regime.
Seun claimed that the Abiolas accused Fela of stealing their Ferrari at gunpoint. During Buhari’s era, his Deputy Head of State, Tunde Idiagbon, enforced laws that made armed robbery punishable by death.
However, Seun explained that Fela avoided the setup because he was performing in Cameroon when the Abiolas made the accusation at a police station.

In an Instagram Live post, Seun Kuti said: “Abiola and his wife, Simbiat, falsely accused Fela and his boys of robbing her of her Ferrari at gunpoint during Idiagbon’s regime. They intended to have my father executed for armed robbery, a crime punishable by death at that time. They filed a statement at a police station claiming they saw Fela and his gang committing the robbery. Fortunately, Fela was in Cameroon performing the day the accusation was made, which saved him, as he couldn’t be in two places at once.”
Seun added that in response, Fela and his elder brother, Femi, retaliated by taking 12 buckets of feces to Abiola’s house in the middle of the night, smearing the compound as payback, referenced in Fela’s song “Give Me Shit, I Give You Shit.” The police later visited Fela’s house to investigate the incident, but Fela denied involvement, stating he would have done it openly if given the chance.
