- Can the Super Eagles Bounce Back? The Urgent Need for Reform in Nigerian Football.
Solomon Dalung, the former Minister of Youth and Sports Development, is voicing his worries about the Super Eagles’ decline during the current World Cup qualifiers.
He believes that the team’s struggles stem from poor sports administration and a lack of strategic leadership, which he feels have hindered their progress since he left office.
Lack of Leadership Commitment in Sports Administration
Dalung points to a leadership crisis in Nigerian sports administration as a significant hurdle for football in the country.
He notes that constant changes in leadership and inconsistent policies have stifled growth in the sector.
The move to dissolve the Ministry of Sports and replace it with the National Sports Commission, which mainly focuses on technical aspects rather than policy-making, has only weakened the framework necessary for sports development in Nigeria.
He argues that without strong political support, even the most talented coaches would find it tough to motivate players or rally national backing.
The absence of clear direction at the top has left Nigerian football in a state of flux, making it challenging for the Super Eagles to reclaim their former glory on the international stage.
The Super Eagles’ Journey in the World Cup Qualifiers
Nigeria’s path to the 2026 FIFA World Cup has been quite rocky. Right now, the Super Eagles are in a tough spot in the qualifiers, finding it hard to clinch those all-important wins.
A shocking loss to the Benin Republic has only added to their troubles, leaving them sitting fifth in their group and at risk of missing out on the expanded World Cup.
With critical matches against Rwanda and Zimbabwe coming up, the team really needs to find its winning spirit again if they want any shot at qualification.

Dalung, however, isn’t too optimistic, saying that unless something remarkable happens, Nigeria’s chances of making it to the next World Cup look pretty grim.
Can the Super Eagles Make a Comeback?
Even with the current hurdles, Dalung holds onto the belief that there’s still hope.
He insists that with the right leadership, a clear vision, and some strategic planning, Nigeria’s football scene can be rejuvenated.
He points out that success isn’t just about having skilled players—it’s about creating a system that motivates them, rallies national support, and implements consistent policies for long-term growth.
The decline of the Super Eagles is a wake-up call for Nigerian sports leaders.
Without immediate reforms and dedicated leadership, the country risks ongoing struggles on the global stage.
But if the right changes are put in place, Nigeria could once again rise to be a powerhouse in world football.
