Students of the University of Ibadan have staged a protest to express their grievances over the school management’s decision to ration electricity supply to 10 hours daily and hike tuition fees.
The protest, which started on Tuesday, has continued into Wednesday, with students bearing placards at the front gate of the university.

According to Aweda Bolaji, the students’ union president, “The injustice that has been melted upon us as students of the University of Ibadan is getting too much. The university cannot ration electricity to students in this 21st century.”
Bolaji also stated that the recent policies by the management were “not satisfactory and an inconsiderate action.”
He sought the reversal of the new electricity schedule and tuition increment, saying, “There will be neither lecture nor transportation within the school premises on the 17th of July, 2024.
The Mass action will continue on July 17 starting from 5 am.”
The students’ union has condemned the ongoing victimization of three students who embarked on a peaceful protest on May 13, 2024, and called for an end to the victimization.

The union demands a total reversal of all fees and not a reduction, and refunds for those who have paid.
“We will continue to protest until our demands are met,” Bolaji said. “We will not be silenced or intimidated by the management.”
