A woman has dragged a textile firm, Hongkong Runda Textile Company Limited, to the Federal High Court in Kano over the unauthorized usage of her late daughter’s photos for promotional purposes.
Hajiya Habiba Aliyu sued the textile firm to the tune of N250 million as damages for alleged infringement on the rights of her deceased daughter, Nafisa Aliyu.

The plaintiff claims that the defendants used her daughter’s pictures and artworks on their textile materials without any permission.

Habiba alleged that the defendants copied her late daughter’s artworks from her Facebook profile and used them to attract customers.
Habiba, through her counsel, Aliyu Suleiman-Jatau, argued that selling, marketing retailing, and distributing of Mudatex Textiles Materials and products of the other four defendants with the artwork pictures of her deceased daughter infringed on her rights.
Defendants in the suit are a Chinese national, Ms Ling Haiying; Hongkong Runda Textile Company Limited, Mudatex Brothers, Dan Kano and Sani Tahir.
However, Justice Sa’adatu Ibrahim-Mark, presiding judge, adjourned the case till December 11, 2020, to hear a preliminary objection for the case.
