Akpabio Declares 2 Senate Seats Vacant

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has declared two seats of the Red Chamber vacant.

The seats were that of Senator Dave Umahi of Ebonyi South Senatorial District, and Ibrahim Geidam of Yobe East Senatorial District.

Akpabio disclosed that the decision was made due to their assumption of office as ministers.

In response, the Senate has requested the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct by-elections immediately to fill the vacant seats.

Umahi and Geidam were both inaugurated as members of the 10th National Assembly in June, but they resigned in August after being appointed as ministers by President Bola Tinubu.

Umahi is now the Minister of Works, while Geidam serves as the Minister of Police Affairs.

Also, Simon Lalong, the former governor of Plateau State, recently resigned as Labour Minister to return to the Senate following a court verdict affirming him as the Senator for Plateau South.

INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu has also announced the possibility of holding re-run and bye-elections nationwide in February.
