AFCON 2023: All Eyes on Osimhen as Nigeria Takes on Equatorial Guinea

As the 2023 edition of the African Cup of All Nations (AFCON 2023) enters day two, football fans have turned their attention to the Super Eagles of Nigeria, particularly striker Victor Osimhen.

The 38th edition is the first time in a long while the Super Eagles have been listed among outsiders to lift the trophy.

That prediction has been fueled by the absence of key players like Wilfred Ndidid, Victor Boniface and Sadiq Umar, who were all ruled out less than a week to the opening ceremony.

Sadiq was the last among the bunch to be ruled out and was swiftly replaced by Terem Moffi at the last minute.

Hosts, Ivory Coast have also piled pressure on the three-time African champions to perform after seeing off Guinea-Bissau 2-0 on Sunday night.

Goals from Seko Fofana and Jean-Philippe Krasso ensured victory over the African wild dogs of Guinea Bissau on Saturday night at the Olympic Stadium Ebimpe in Abidjan.

The Nigerian side will be banking on reigning African Player of The Year, Victor Osimhen to deliver the goods if the team must show working.

The Napoli striker bagged 10 goals during qualifiers and will be hoping to extend his goals for the national team.

The most concern for the African giants is the defense, particularly the goalkeeping department where Francis Uzoho looks primed to be Jose Peseiro’s number one.

As they square up against Equitorial Guinea on Sunday evening, Nigerians and Africa will be watching with keen eyes.

Will they go beyond the Round of 16 ousting by Tunisia in the last edition is a question only time will answer.
