Bayelsa To Renovate Kolo Creek Gas Turbine Plant

The Bayelsa state government has announced that it will renovate the Kolo Creek Gas Turbine Plant in Imiringi, Ogbia Local Government Area(LGA).

The State’s Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo announced in a recent statement after a meeting with Jamboogois Global Services Limited and its foreign partners at the Yenagoa Government Building.

Ewhrudjakpo said the government was willing to take advantage of energy sector liberalization and make the most of the state’s abundant natural gas reserves to build additional power plants to meet people’s growing energy needs.

He added that the state government will build a new gas turbine plant to create a favorable environment for the growth of energy-related industries in Bayelsa.

Kolo Creek’s gas turbines alone can no longer meet the state’s power needs, according to him, as several previously off-grid communities have expanded their grids.

The Deputy Governor affirmed that the government already signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the company to improve power generation and distribution in Bayelsa province.

He called on Jamboogois Global Services Limited to accelerate the retrofitting of gas turbines and the on-site installation of prepaid meters for electricity consumers.

Ewhrudjakpo said:

We are going to latch in on the opportunity created by the law in the power sector. Bayelsa is in a hurry to develop, so we are excited about this project. The Kolo Creek Gas Turbine is among the first of such plants established in Nigeria.

“Power is productivity, and productivity is progress. No industrialization can take place without power. As a government, we are happy that a son of the soil is spearheading this project, and we are quite encouraged by the steps taken so far.

“You talked about the issue of smart prepaid meters. The prepaid meter is another way of making sure that we do not only generate revenue but also ensure that people will get value for money.

“I also think that the power needs of the state are beyond the Kolo Creek Gas Turbine, as it is now. So, we should be looking at establishing another gas turbine in the state because Bayelsa is gas, and gas is Bayelsa State.”
