FG Drops Firearms Case Against Emefiele

The Federal Government has dropped its firearms charges against detained ex-Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele.

The development was in response to a verbal request from the Federal Director of Prosecutions, Mohammed Abubakar Etsu.

According to the previous lawsuit, the former governor of the central bank had illegally possessed firearms.

However, Emefiele’s attorney, Joseph Daudu, vehemently denied the request, arguing that before fresh charges could be brought, his client must first be released on bail as the court had previously decided.

The Federal Court of Justice’s Abuja Branch’s Justice Nicholas Oweibo then asked the two parties to get together once more on Thursday, August 17, to decide the case.

In June 2023, Emefiele, who had been in office since June 2014, was dismissed by President Bola Tinubu on grounds of CBN mismanagement.

Since then, the former CBN Governor has remained in custody despite two separate federal judges ordering his release stating that no serious charges have been brought against him that could support his continued detention following Nigerian law.
