Governorship Primary: APC Nullifies Rev Fr Hyacinth Alia’s Election in Benue

The ruling All Progressives Congress has nullified governorship primary that produced Rev Fr Hyacinth Alia as flag bearer in Benue State.

The nullification follows a recommendation by an appeal committee as part its report sent to the APC national secretariat in Abuja.

According to the committee, the move was to save the party from the agony of not fielding an eligible candidate ahead of the governorship elections in the state.

Daily Report Nigeria recalls that Fr Hyacinth Alia, a priest with the Catholic Church Diocese of Gboko was declared winner of the APC governorship primary in Benue.

Alia, who was earlier suspended by the Diocese, defeated his closest contender with a wide margin of votes.

The clergyman contested against Mike Aondoakaa, a former Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), Barnabas Gemade, a former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

However, a report of the APC Gubernatorial Appeal Committee of Benue State, made up of Uzoamaka Onyeama – Chairman, Gyang Gyand – Secretary and Lawal Narogo – Member and send to the National Chairman of the party, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, led to the nullification of the election.

Part of the report seen by Daily Report Nigeria reads;

“The few result sheets the aspirants presented to us had more curiously no agent of the guber aspirants or agent of the declared candidate to prove the results sheets produced and declared genuine.

“It is the submission of the Appeal committee members that form the foregoing, the past event of Zamfara State and the most latest and potent danger of Anambra State; that no governorship primary held in Benue State and we recommend as follows; that the NWC cancel in its entirety the gubernatorial primary election in Benue State and conduct a fresh election.”
