Gunmen Kill INEC Official In Ebonyi

Gunmen suspected to be kidnappers have reportedly killed one Emmanuel Igwe, an Assistant Electoral Officer (AEF) of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), in Ebonyi State.

It was learnt that the incident occurred on Sunday evening while he was returning from Anambra State along the Ishiagu-Mpu Road.

The gunmen during the attack, also abducted Igwe’s wife and killed a roadside farmer.

SP Onome Onovwakpoyeya, the spokesperson for the police, who confirmed the incident on Monday in Abakaliki stated that the police have sent its tactical team to hunt down the criminals.

She said:

Yes, there was an attack where one person was shot in the head through the windscreen and nothing was taken from the vehicle and the other victim was a farmer working on his farm whom they cut off the throat.

“So, there is a serious manhunt for the hoodlums or whoever they are.”

Furthermore, the Ishiagu community in the Ivo Local Government Area of Ebonyi, where the incident took place, has called on the police and other security agencies to take action and curb the emerging security challenges along the Ishiagu-Mpu road.

The community members urged the authorities to take necessary measures to prevent such incidents from happening again.
