Nnamdi Kanu May Die in DSS Custody – Lawyer

Aloy Ejimakor, Special Counsel to Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has said that the agitator may die in detention.

Kanu’s heart is failing him, according to Ejimakor, and he has severe breathing problems.

The counsel expressed concern that the IPOB leader was not receiving adequate medical attention while in the custody of the Department of State Services, DSS.

Ejimakor stated this while pleading with the International Red Cross Society to arrange for Kanu’s immediate and independent medical examination.

In a letter titled ‘Re: Urgent Appeal for your humanitarian intervention with the Government of Nigeria to grant Mazi Nnamdi Kanu access to independent medical examination.

Ejimakor pleaded with the Red Cross to “bring your good offices to bear on the Government of Nigeria to grant our client the opportunity of an independent medical examination and care as soon as possible.”

“Our client informs us that his blood has been drawn more than 20 times without explanation and that he continues to feel apprehension and dread that he is in the custody of those who participated in his extraordinary rendition,” Ejimakor writes.

“His health, particularly his heart, is failing him, and he was experiencing severe breathing difficulties; his fingernails are cracking, and he feels dizzy.” He told us that despite the fact that the Nigerian government was aware of his in-jail medical examination, he was not receiving the necessary medical care and his heart is enlarged by 13%.

“He stated that serious medical problems necessitate the immediate and constant attention of specialist doctors [which he is not receiving in the detention facility].” In this situation, he faces the grim and imminent risk of losing his life in detention on a daily basis.”
