Oil Theft: Army Destroys Illegal Refinery In Delta

Troops of the 6th Division of the Nigerian Army have destroyed a massive illegal refinery in Delta State.

Onyema Nwachukwu, the army’s director of public relations, said in a statement on Thursday.

Nwachukwu disclosed that the illegal refinery was located at Ogbokoko and Atu in Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State.

According to the Director, about eight ovens used to refine illegally stolen crude oil were destroyed on August 23.

Other destruction were 14 storage tanks of stolen crude oil of about 200,000 liters and 90,000 liters of locally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO).

The statement read:

Troops of 6 Division Nigerian Army have continued to crack down on saboteurs of Nigeria’s oil sector in South-South Nigeria.

“On 23 August 2023, troops conducting anti-oil theft operations, responding to actionable intelligence swooped on an illegal oil refinery site in the general area of Ogbokoko and Atu in Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State.

“During the operations, troops destroyed 8 active Ovens used for illegal refining of stolen crude oil, 14 storage reservoirs containing stolen crude oil estimated at 200,000 litres and 90,000 litres of locally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO).”

He explained that an investigation was underway to arrest the oil thieves who fled the scene after seeing troops advance.

The illegal refinery site was destroyed on-site following current Operation Delta Safety guidelines.

He charged the public to report any suspected acts of vandalism or crime to security agencies to strengthen ongoing operations to limit economic sabotage in the country.
