Okuama: Service Chiefs Initiate Investigative Hearing

On Wednesday, the service chiefs appeared at the Senate Joint Committee, which comprises the Army, Navy, Defence, and Airforce committees.

Their purpose was to initiate an investigative hearing regarding the brutal killing of military personnel in the Okuama community within the Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State last Thursday.

To honor the souls of the fallen soldiers, a minute of silence was observed before Chairman of the joint committee, Ahmed Lawan, announced that the investigative hearing would be conducted privately.

Present at the meeting were the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt-General Taoreed Lagbaja; Chief of Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hassan Abubakar; and Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla.

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, sent a representative.

Recall that on Tuesday, the Senate ordered an investigation into the killings and directed its Committee on Defence, Army, Navy, and Air Force to collaborate with the Military authorities in gathering more information about the remote and immediate cause of what they described as “a dastardly act.”

Earlier, the Defence Headquarters had released a list of 17 military personnel who lost their lives during a peace mission to warring communities in the area.

The Defence Headquarters confirmed that 17 personnel, including the Commanding Officer of the 181 Amphibious Battalion, two majors, one captain, and 12 other members of the battalion, were among those killed.
